CFO Requirements

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s or CPA preferred)

• 5+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including CFO or equivalent roles

• Strong preference for experience in agriculture, dairy, or commodity-driven industries

Technical & Strategic Competencies

• Deep expertise in accounting, financial reporting, and budget management

• Experience managing balance sheets and cash flow for large, asset-heavy businesses

• Proficiency in financial modeling, data analytics, and cost analysis tools

• Strong grasp of commodity markets, pricing strategies, and risk mitigation

• Ability to align financial strategy with business growth and sustainability

Leadership & Communication

• Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop finance teams

• Strong collaboration skills with operational and HR leaders

• Able to clearly communicate complex financial insights to executive stakeholders

• Skilled in influencing decisions while respecting ownership dynamics

CFO Responsibilities

Strategic Capital Formation

• Design and execute financing strategies: bank syndications, asset-backed lending, monetized installment sales, strategic partnerships, private equity alternatives

• Manage relationships with lenders, investors, and financial institutions

• Evaluate M&A, expansion, and investment opportunities using rigorous financial analysis

Financial Planning & Analysis

• Lead annual business planning and budgeting, along with long-range (5-year) forecasts

• Develop models, KPIs, and cost analysis tools to support decisions

• Deliver actionable insights on margin improvement and operational efficiency

Operational Finance & Controls

• Oversee accounting functions via Controller and bookkeeper

• Lead development and performance management of the finance team

• Monitor cash flow daily; optimize working capital management

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax laws, and lender covenants

• Continuously improve financial systems for real-time visibility

Risk Management

• Identify and manage financial, operational, and regulatory risks

• Lead insurance planning, disaster recovery, and mitigation strategies

• Manage exposure to commodity price volatility, credit risk, and interest rates

Cross-Divisional Collaboration

• Partner with COO–Farm on crop budgeting, equipment purchasing, and field operations

• Partner with COO–Dairy on feed cost strategies, milk pricing, herd growth, and facility CapEx

• Collaborate with HR Director on labor cost planning, housing budgets, and compliance

Recurring Accountabilities

• Daily: Monitor cash position and working capital; approve transactions; run ROI analyses

• Weekly: Conduct finance team check-ins; attend leadership and operational meetings

• Monthly: Deliver close package, updated forecasts, and expense reports; lead accountability meetings; provide KPI dashboards and variance analyses to CEO and Board

• Quarterly: Prepare Board presentations; refresh strategic forecasts; engage with lenders/investors; conduct team goal setting and performance assessments

Reporting Structure

• Reports directly to the CEO

• Collaborates cross-functionally with COO–Farm, COO–Dairy, and HR Director

CFO Rewards
